On Dec 6, 2017 A new Catholic Bishop of Christchurch has been appointed nearly two years after his predecessor's death.
Martin, a former St Bede's College deputy rector, said it was a privilege to serve "in the footsteps of those before me".
Born in Hastings, the Bishop-elect studied theology and arts at Victoria University and served as rector at Wellington's St Patrick's College.
More recently he was the general bursar for the Society of Mary in Rome, an international chapter of the order he first joined in 1985.
One of Father Paul Martin's key decisions will be to approve the restoration of the earthquake-damaged Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
The church has been without a Christchurch bishop since Bishop Barry Jones died in February 2016.
